On the 11th: The most respectable, honourable and most learned scholar, and saint, sufi and gnostic of Islam is remembered throughout the Muslim world: Sayyedunah Qutub-ul-Aqtab Ghaus al-Azam al-Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani al-Hussaini (radi allah tala unho) Birth and lineage of Sayyedunah Ghaus al-Azam (radi allah tala unho) Hazrat Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani al-Hussaini (radi allah tala unho) came from a place called al-Jilan in present day Iran. He was born on the 1st of Ramadan 470 Hijri (1091 C.E.). He was born to a pious and saintly mother called Hazrat Ummul-khair Fatima bint-e-Abu'Abdullah Suma-ee al-Hussaini (radi allah tala anha). His father's name was Hazrat Abu Saleh Musa Jangi Sawst al-Hasani (radi allah tala unho). Hazrat Ghaus Al-Azam lived for 90 years and he passed away on the 9th of Rabi-ul Akhir 561 Hijri (1182 C.E). His shrine is in Baghdad, Iraq. Born a Saint Hazrat Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani al-Hussaini (radi allah tala unho) was born in Ramadan and would not eat or drink during daylight hours. So much so that the following year when people were uncertain about the start of Ramadan they decided to see if Hazrat Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani al-Hussaini (radi allah tala unho) was feeding. As a small child he saw spiritual beings that were invisible to others. He would see them again and again and they even accompanied him in the woods. One night at the age of 17 years he was out walking when an Ox spoke to him and told him that his mission was not to be a labourer. Then from his house he saw Mount Arafat (near Makkah) and thousands of pilgrims marching to Makkah. Knowledge of Hazrat Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani al-Hussaini (radi allah tala unho) He came to Baghdad at the age of 18 years and spent the next 33 years studying and meditating. He came to Baghdad to study Shariah, Hadith, Tafsir, Fiqh, Sufism and Islamic Sciences. He studied for 13 years and lived alone in a derelict tower. For 3 years he lived in the ruins of a deserted palace and lived off scraps. Giving up the world completely, Hazrat Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani al-Hussaini (radi allah tala unho) turned to ALLAH alone and slowly attained special powers. When Hazrat Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani al-Hussaini (radi allah tala unho) returned to his people he began to preach and invite people towards Islam. As soon as he began to preach the crowds grew and grew, enthralled by his words. Soon he needed enormous areas to hold crowds of up to 70,000 people. His voice could be heard clearly no matter how far they were sitting and people listened in absolute silence, gripped by his remarkable words. In his speeches the people could feel the presence of ALLAH. His knowledge was such that one day a Qari (a reciter of the Holy Quran) recited a verse from the Holy Quran, and upon hearing this verse Hazrat Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani al-Hussaini (radi allah tala unho) started giving the commentary related to this verse. The listeners reported that a 11 commentaries were given for this one verse. He then continued to give 40 commentaries upon the original 11 mentioned! Each commentary and quotation was always cited with a reference to a specific source. Miracles of Hazrat Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani al-Hussaini (radi allah tala unho) One he was preaching about 'destiny' when a huge snake fell on him and wrapped itself around him. But he simply continued with his speech and ignored the snake. He once vowed not to eat until ALLAH himself fed him. As a result he starved to several weeks until one day a man came and started putting food into his mouth. For 40 years he prayed Fajr Namaaz with the ablution (wudhu) of Isha Namaaz (basically he did not sleep the entire night). For 15 years after Isha namaz he completed the recitation of the Qur'an. He cured many sick people. Whilst he was preaching, epilepsy was absent in Baghdad. He knws the inner and outer state of every saint and no saint can have any power without his permission (past, present or future). All his mureeds and friends leave this world with their sins forgiven and their repentace is accepted. This also includes anyone who dies as a member of a Sufi Order that he has links with Hazrat Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani al-Hussaini (radi allah tala unho), and anyone who calls on him, thinks of him and loves him will also be forgiven. He showed little respect for the rich and powerful. once a Caliph came to him and gave him a bag full of money. Hazrat Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani al-Hussaini (radi allah tala unho) simply held up the bag and squeezed it. Blood poured from the bag and he told the Caliph that this was the blood of the pople from whom they money had been taken illegally. He was always welcomeing and generous to the poor and needy. He would give away his clothes even if it meant he was only left with the clothes he was wearing. |
